Everybody who works usually wears some type of footwear and if it is a pair of shoes then technically they could be considered to be work shoes. However, there are many types of specially designed shoes that are made for people who perform specific jobs, and these are what we usually refer to as work shoes. These shoes are essentially designed for personnel who spend most of the day standing or moving about. Work shoes are also built for people in specific occupations as an item of safety gear.
Work shoes are available for many types of workers such as loggers, construction workers, miners, carpenters, maintenance crews, hikers, waitresses, waiters, chefs, and people who love the outdoors. The shoes are generally made out of good quality leather such as box leather, cowhide and open grain leather. Other types of materials that are often used to make work shoes include Gore-Tex, Thinsulate, and rubber, etc., which are made to withstand prolonged, rough use. Safety shoes typically have a metal safety cap in the toe to save the toes from falling objects. These shoes are generally known as steel toe shoes.
The type of shoes that you wear at work and the material they are made from will depend on the type of job you are doing and the environment that you are doing it in. People working in wet areas use water repellant shoes that are made of rubber, Neoprene or latex. Water resistant work shoes can also be made of from full grain, waterproof leather. If the shoes have a Dri-Lex lining with an additional watertight membrane, they are designed to keep the feet dry and seal out the moisture. The shoes also have tough, anti-skid soles that give a good grip on slippery surfaces. The insole supports the full foot arch and the heels have a cushioning seat that absorbs shocks and vibrations. If you are working in a warm environment you will want to wear lightweight, breathable shoes.
Work shoes are available in many sizes, colors, design, and styles for men and women of all ages. It's a good idea to make sure you keep the shoes clean and polish them regularly. You also need to make sure that the work shoes are the right size for you as shoes that don't fit properly will likely give you foot problems.
