Plastic Drums

Most of us are familiar with storage drums in our day to day existence. Plastic drums are basically cylindrical containers that are commonly used for the storage and transporting of various types of materials, predominantly fluids and powders. These fluids may range from water to special liquids that used for industrial applications. The drums are also sometimes used to store hazardous materials in them.

Because plastic has excellent corrosion resistance capabilities, it is used extensively in the industrial sector. Though drums are available in a wide variety of materials, plastic is generally preferred because of its ease in transportation, its low cost and its light weight. Plastic drums can also be recycled or refurbished and used again. However, sometimes the lids on the drums may have to be replaced as they might not seal properly over time.

The standard size for plastic drums is 55 gallons however they come in assorted colors and sizes and they can also be custom made to suit your needs. There are straight sided drums available that have either an open top or a closed top. The open head drums have tops or lids that can be taken off which enables you access the product inside of it easier. The lids of these drums are held in place by a lever-latch or a bolt ring. Open head drums are generally used for storing powders in, but they can also be used for storing liquids. The tops of closed head drums are fixed on and are not removable. However, there are small openings on the top of closed head drums that let you pour the contents out. Plastic closed head drums are usually used to store liquids in.

Taper sided plastic drums are easier to store than the straight sided drums as they slide into each other and save you valuable floor space. There are also some accessories available for plastic drums including drum liners, drum wrenches, faucets, and pumps.

Plastic drums are often used to store materials for long periods of time. This may often lead to corrosion of the drums with certain types of liquids. This could result in industrial waste seepage and environmental contamination. Consequently, care needs to be taken that the materials stored in containers should be properly sealed or utilized before they leak.
