These machines can easily operate in all types of terrains such as snow, muddy areas, and rocky surfaces, etc. However, the ground does need to be firm enough to support the large weight of the bulldozer to stop it from sinking. In a way, a bulldozer sort of resembles a tank as they are equipped with metal tracks to help move them over the terrain.

The first versions of bulldozers were based upon farm tractors which were used to plough through the fields. These new machines were used to dig canals, raise earth dams, and do other earthmoving jobs as the tractors were equipped with a large thick metal plate in front of the vehicle. This thick metal plate or blade is made to dig up layers of soil and push it forward as the machine advances. Later on various specialized blades were developed for high volume loads such as coal. Front rake style blades were designed to remove objects such as large boulders and blades that have razor sharp edges were invented to cut through tree stumps. In some early versions of bulldozers the driver sat on top in the open without a cabin, whereas most modern bulldozers have an enclosed cabin for the operator.

Over time bulldozers became bigger, more powerful, and more sophisticated devices. More powerful engines, more reliable drive trains, better tracks, raised cabins, and hydraulic arms were introduced .

Bulldozers are specified by their: horsepower rating, torque, operating weight, the number of cylinders, total displacement in cubic centimeters, and transmission, etc. They may be turbocharged to get extra power and to compensate for the altitude differences. There are many companies that buy the engine and assemble different parts of bulldozers.

The attachments are operated hydraulically and so a strong and powerful gear pump is needed to develop the required pressure. Also, since there are sudden weight changes, the fuel pump needs to adjust to sudden load shifts.
